COSPAR Workshop on Planetary Science

COSPAR Workshop on Planetary Science (English version)

COSPAR (Committee for Space Research) is the organization that group together countries and scientists interested in the space activity. Directly or indirectly, the space agencies of developed as well as developing countries participate in COSPAR.

Starting in 2001 COSPAR has been organizing Capacity Building Workshops to promote the use of data from space missions among the scientists and students, mainly in developing countries. Nowadays there are available several data bases of free access with data from several space missions that have not been widely used, mainly because of lack of knowledge on the existence of the facilities and the way to use them.

Meanwhile, in Latin America the community of scientists working in planetary sciences has been growing. As a proof we recently held the III Workshop in Planetary Sciences of the South Cone of America in March 2006 Colonia (Uruguay). In this meeting there were over 50 scientists and students from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Paraguay and Uruguay. The development of this community has been possible due to the close collaboration among scientists in several research groups in the previous countries. As an agreement reached in the III Workshop we decided to pursue a new step in the academic development of this community: to promote the use of data from planetary space missions in our every day research.

With the support of COSPAR, a new Workshop of their series will be held but in this case it will be devoted to the use of planetary missions’ data bases. This will be the first Capacity Building Workshop in this field related to planets and small bodies of the Solar System. We will focus on missions to comets, asteroids, satellites, rings and planets, like Mars. The Workshop is oriented to scientists and students mainly from Latin America interested in planetary sciences, which are willing to use data from space missions. The participants will work for two weeks with real data from the missions and they will start some research project with that data that they could continue after returning to their home institute.

We have already confirmed the participation of scientists from NASA, ESA and JAXA to give lectures about the scientific objectives of the missions and to give an advice on how to access and use the data. There will be some introductory lectures about the present knowledge of the Solar System and the orbital dynamics of the space missions. The participants will work with computers with internet access in order to download and work with the data. They will define and carry out a research project using the space data. A preliminary report of the results of the project has to be presented at the end of the Workshop.
